NEWCASTLE VIDEO MOVIEMAKERS FILM FESTIVAL AWARDS

Last Nights (Wednesday 17th) Annual film awards were shown at the Lakes Cinema Boolaroo to a full house. The audience was particularly enthralled by the entries from schools from the Central Coast, Newcastle and the Hunter. The winner’s film was made by Blake Phillips from Belmont High with an excellent parody on a solicitor’s office in the film “P&S Solicitors.

Edgeworth Heights PS were second with what could only be classified as a horror film (!) entitled “The School is Evil” It was a very imaginative script and well acted by the pupils. Finally a film that tackled extremely well, the important social evil of bullying in schools, “Put you Hands up”. The most amazing thing about this film was that it was shot on a still camera that had the ability of taking about 1 minute of video at a time. It shows that you do not need expensive equipment to make a good movie.

Geoff Peel won the highest award of the evening with his very humorous film “No Virginia, a story of the demise of Santa Clause. Blake Phillips, an extremely talented local schoolboy, entered an animation in the music video section which not only won a Festival award, but as the result of the publicity of this film he is negotiating animation contracts with “certain” European music labels. Well done Blake.

John Sirette, documentary maker extrodinaire, blew us away with his production, Wagtails. He demonstarted his mastery of every aspect of film making in this story of two wagtails, mating, nest building and bringing up their young.

Other award winners from the club were, Mike O’Neil (animation) Brian Lemin (Moviemaker of the Year) and the clubs’ Novaflicks group (Group production award)

A record number of 36 films were entered this year with three of them from overseas.
